17.09.2007 FILAT’S NEW PARTY TO ABIDE BY LIBERAL DEMOCRACY VALUES

Chisinau, September 17 (Infotag). MP Vladimir Filat, who left the Democratic Party last week, is going to set up a new political party in concert with a group of his likely-minded colleagues.

On Monday, Filat convened a news conference in Infotag and said the new party “will be a modern political project that will share the popular choice, will be based on liberal democratic values, and will be working to achieve viable solutions to the problems the Moldovan populace is facing”.

Filat said he was not alone in divorcing the Democratic Party, but preferred to withhold the names of those who followed his example.

The parliamentarian presumes the Democratic Party no more meets the principles which he set before himself at entering an active political life. In particular, Vladimir Filat disagrees with the order of decision-making practiced in the party.

Filat voiced regret that he had to abandon a party which he belonged for more than a decade, but he had no option, and hopes for preserving good relations with former party comrades.

He dismissed assertions that his departure and intention to establish a party of his own had, allegedly, been prompted by Mark Tkachuk, the Home Policy Advisor to the Moldovan President: “Today, the sun is shining so brightly not at all on Tkachuk’s request. I am glad about his reaching such a level of influence in the country, when all events taking place here are associated with his name. But Mark Tkachuk has no relation to my plans to create a new party”.

Filat said that quite many people, who never went in for politics before, are going to come to the new party, that “I am being backed by many prominent figures in the Moldovan society, who share same ideals with us and who have expressed interest to the said political project”.

He believes that not solely the political class but the entire republic needs to have a new, healthy breath.
