26.09.2007 PRESIDENTIAL EX-ADVISER SUGGESTS THAT MOLDOVA GIVES UP TRANSNISTRIA IN FAVOR OF EUROPEAN INTEGRATION

Chisinau, September 26 (Infotag). Moldova ought to renounce Transnistria for the sake of European integration – such is the essence of a new political project “Strategy for the Republic of Moldova”, which was presented in Infotag today by its author Sergiu Mocanu, former Adviser-at-Large to President Vladimir Voronin.

“To not miss the last, Balkan train leaving for the European Union, the Chisinau authorities should radically revise the order of handling the Transnistrian crisis”, Mocanu said. “The Transnistria problem is key for the Republic of Moldova, and it does not permit the Government to control a part of the country’s territory. For a medium-term and long-term period, the Transnistria problem has no chances of a solution. And a remoter solution of the problem may mean that the country will experience an indefinitely long period of insecurity, poverty and isolation from the European community”.

To avoid all this, he suggested establishing an administrative border along the Dniester River – with all elements and attributes of a state border.

“This does not imply cutting region off the Republic of Moldova. This implies cutting the Transnistria problem off the European integration process. Presently, the nation’s chief priority is European integration, not country re-intregration. De jure, Transnistria is a subject of the Republic of Moldova, but de facto this zone has for 17 years been under the political, economic and military protectorate of the Russian Federation. We can well return to the problem solution upon integration into the European Union”, Mocanu said.

He emphasized that such strategy is not an infringement on Moldova’s independence but is the only possibility of integration into the European Union.

Mocanu also said that this new Strategy is being launched by an initiative group under a slogan “To the European Union – with a Controlled Territory”.

…AND ANNOUNCES PLAN TO ESTABLISH NEW PARTY

Chisinau, September 26 (Infotag). Presidential ex-adviser Sergiu Mocanu stated at the news conference in Infotag today he is going to develop his “Strategy for the Republic of Moldova” political project into a political party within 6 months.

Mocanu explained he is not setting himself an goal to create a new party immediately, “but such party needs to be formed – for a healthy political competition in the country and for revealing new leaders in such conditions. At the moment, Moldova does not have political figures able to match and oppose Vladimir Voronin who is a strong political figure”.

Mocanu stressed that unlike other parties here, this new political force is not being created for a concrete personality, so nobody knows who its leader will be. He stated readiness to struggle for leadership in it strictly in the conditions of a free competition.

At the same time, he evaded answering why he quitted the coalition of democratic forces in 2003 upon loosing the election of chairman of the coalition, which subsequently became the Moldova Noastra Alliance.

Sergiu Mocanu reaffirmed he had himself offered to President Voronin his services as an adviser, and had quitted that post voluntarily several months ago.

“I ceased being loyal to the President from the moment when Voronin shifted accents and named the country reintegration a more important objective than European integration”, said Sergiu Mocanu.
