24.10.2007 VITALII COLIBABA’S LAWYER CONSIDERS ЕСHR COULD PUNISH MOLDOVAN GOVERNMENT MORE SEVERELY

Chisinau, October 24 (Infotag). Vitalii Colibaba’s lawyer Roman Zadoinov considers that the ЕСHR could punish Moldovan Government more severely for tortures, to which his client was subjected.

On Wednesday at a press conference in Infotag Zadoinov said that the defense demanded a compensation at 70 thousand euro, but the ЕСHR obliged Moldova to pay only 16.5 thousand euro to the victim.

“The court took into consideration a statement by the Moldovan Government representative in the ЕСHR that Moldova has another reality, there are problems with the execution of functions and those of financial nature”, Zadoinov said.

In his words, Colibaba’s case is the second case, connected with tortures, which was instituted against Moldova in the ЕСHR.

“As far as I know, there are three more similar cases there”, the lawyer specified.

Vitalii Colbaba was detained by the police in April 2006 on a suspicion of a theft. He was taken to the police station of the Buiucani sector, where he was beaten with a plastic bottle, filled with water, during 40 minutes. Then the suspect was placed in a solitary cell, where he tried to commit a suicide and cut his veins afterwards. Colibaba‘s guilt was not proved.
