MOLDOVAN FARMERS ARE SICK OF AUTHORITIES’ SMOOTH WORDS – UNIAGROPROTECT PRESIDENT

“The Moldovan farmers are sick and tired of the authorities’ honey words and are ready to pass to concrete actions in this respect,” said the President of the UniAgroProtect National Union of Agricultural Producers, Alexandru Slusari, at a news conference at Infotag today. He also thinks that the ruling coalition, represented by the lawmakers and other public officials, is simply luring the Moldovan farmers, without trying to solve their problems. “All over this year, we have been asking them to solve three main issues for the country’s strategic sector: to approve the Agricultural Development Strategy – 2020, to clearly set the VAT rate in agriculture, as well as to increase the subsidization fund for the national farming sector. These are only some problems that must be solved in Moldova now. Yet, up to the start of the European Partnership Summit due in Vilnius on November 28-29, we have been given empty promises at the meetings wit lawmakers and officials of the Moldovan Cabinet of Ministers,” said Slusari. In his words, the Moldovan authorities were deliberately dragging out time, so as to stop farmers from going to streets and from clearly stating that with the help of this wrong policy, conducted by the Government and the Parliament, the farming sector is consciously thrown to the brink of collapse. “Just imagine that Moldova signs the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement with the European Union. High-quality and cheap fruit and vegetables from the EU will start to be shipped to Moldova. With the current taxes imposed to Moldovan farmers, without urgent investments into this market, and more over – with the loss of the Russian sales market (which will immediately close for the RM), the collapse of the national farming sector is imminent,” he said. He also said that the leadership of the majority of Moldovan organizations of agricultural producers decided to boycott the festive meeting dedicated to the National Farmers’ Day and scheduled for November 30. “We are sick and tired of promises. We will not accept some formal congratulations and will not act as crowd in this show staged by the authorities. We need the real settlement of these pressing problems, and not simple honey-words that will bring nothing to us,” said Slusari, stressing that the leaders of the farmers’ organizations have reserved upon themselves the right to start civil protest actions.
