GAGAUZIA GOVERNOR NOT GOING TO QUIT BIG POLITICS UPON MANDATE EXPIRATION…

Mikhail Formuzal, the Bashkan of the southern Moldovan autonomous region of Gagauzia, is not at all going to resign as a politician upon the soon-to-be expiry of his second term of office.

Formuzal stated at his news conference at Infotag today that his mandate will expire next February 14, but yet several months before that date he will embark on a struggle for the mandate of a Moldovan Parliament deputy.

“I have no doubt that my Party of Regions will win seats in the next Parliament. My chief political goal is to ensure political stability in Moldova by using all possible legal means”, stressed Mikhail Formuzal.

Commenting the recent initiative by the Gagauzia Popular Assembly to obtain a quota of 5 MPs in the Moldovan Parliament, Formuzal said that this work is not bringing a particular success, so far.

“We held a meeting with lawmakers in the Moldovan Parliament yesterday. But things would no go farther than just talks, so far. To my mind, 5 mandates in the 101-member Parliament is a very small figure, but it can show a real representation of the Gagauzia population in the country’s supreme legislative assembly. Won’t it be an extra proof of the democratic nature of the Moldovan society?” asked Mikhail Formuzal.

Infotag’s dossier:  In Moldova, elections to parliament are held on the basis of party tickets. To meet this quota demanded by Gagauzia, it is first necessary to introduce changes into the country’s electoral system and, accordingly, the Constitution.
