FARMERS’ ASSOCIATIONS CALL FARMERS TO PARTICIPATE AT PROTEST TO DEFEND THEIR RIGHTS

Moldovan farmers’ associations urge farmers to participate in the protest action in the Chisinau Central Square, on Monday at 11:00, to express dissatisfaction with the Government agricultural policy.

At the Tuesday press conference at Infotag, the National Farmers’ Federation Valeriu Cosarciuc urged farmers to show solidarity, to abandon for one day their fieldwork and come to the protest, to “make authorities hear their voice, taking into account that agriculture is one of Moldovan economy priorities”.

“Last week, the EU Agriculture Commissioner Dacian Ciolos was in visit to Chisinau. He found time to meet Moldovan farmers and discuss the EU Free Trade advantages for Moldovan agriculture. Unfortunately, our authorities do not have time to meet with us and discuss problems in the agricultural sector”, said Cosarciuc.

According to him, farmers support the Republic of Moldova European Integration vector, but want that the state policy to be comparable with the EU policy in agriculture.

The UniAgroProtect Chairman Alexandr Slusari mentioned that the protest, which will include around 4-5 thousand farmers, will be exclusively economical.

“The protest action will be free of political support, although there were attempts to get support of some parties. The single policy we want to promote is the economic policy”, said Slusari.

The Agroinform National Farmers’ Federation Deputy Director Iurie Hurmuzachi mentioned that the farmers’ unsolved problems are the main cause of protests.

“We tried many times to discuss with authorities, but with no result.  However we hope that after this protest problems in agriculture will start to be solved”, said he

The Moldova-Fruct Association Executive Director Iurie Fala said that “Moldovan farmers can not enter the EU with spades”.

“We need a modernization and for this a help from authorities is necessary”, said Fala.

The farmers’ representatives say that the main demands are: amendments to the petroleum market law, so that farmers could import petroleum products by themselves; increasing the agriculture competitiveness; agriculture modernization; agricultural markets de-monopolization, authorities’ transparency in agricultural policy promotion. Farmers expressed hope that they will be heard.
