ECOLOGISTS FROM MOLDOVA, UKRAINE AND ROMANIA TO REALIZE JOINT PROJECT ON ENVIRONMENT PROTECTION Ecologists from Moldova, Ukraine and Romania are realizing joint project under the title “Cross-border cooperation for preventing consequences of natural disasters and reducing environment pollution in the Lower Danube Euroregion”.

 

Ion Toderas, Director of the Moldovan Academy of Sciences (MAS) Zoology Institute, said on the Tuesday press conference at Infotag that “representatives of four institutions are participating in the project realization – from Romanian Lower Danube University, the Institute of Zoology and Institute of Geology and Seismology of the MAS and the Ukrainian Research Center of Marine Ecology”.

 

According to him, “many activities will be held within the project, as well as the next edition of The Red Book of Moldova will be published, where 213 rare animal species will be included, in particular those living in water reservoirs”

 

He has mentioned that “the main goal of the scientists is exploring inhabitants of waters and identifying their role in the environment, impact on ecology, risk of transmitting different diseases to people.

 

“Also, within the frame of the project, modern equipment has been purchased, which will considerably facilitate conducting researches”, said Toderas.

 

Representative of the MAS Institute of Zoology, Doctor Habilitatus Elena Zubcova said that “a reliable network for studying ecosystem will be created within joint cooperation”.

 

She said that four joint expeditions with participation of ecologists and youth have been conducted and on August 14, a scientific seminar will be held in Giurgiulesti, where an ecological guide for experts will be presented.

 

Antoanetta Ene, Head of the project, representative from Romanian Lower Danube University, said that the project costs 1.7 million euros, which are allocated by the European Union and distributed among the four institutions, which are implementing the project.

 

“It is directed not only on conducting researches, but also attracting young specialists to solving ecological issues”, said Ene.

 

Coordinator of the project, Ukrainian Research Center professor Iurie Denga mentioned that realization of such European projects on environment will allow modernizing equipment and conduct deeper researches”.

 

“After conducting researches, the results will be published, among which causes of water and soil pollution, as well as recommendations on improving the situation”, said he.

 

Denga expressed hope that the project will not end with the funding termination, because ecologists have become friends and intend further working together.

 

Project coordinator Oleg Bogdevici of the MAS Institute of Geology and Seismology said that the research zones are localities from Galati and Tulcea judet [district] in Romania, Cahul and Cantemir raions in Moldova and Odessa oblast in Ukraine.

 

The project will last till October 17, 2015 within the joint operational program Moldova-Ukraine-Romania.
