MOLDOVA IS BEING DRAGGED INTO GEOPOLITICAL GAMES BETWEEN WEST AND RUSSIA – EXPERT

07 august, 2014
MOLDOVA IS BEING DRAGGED INTO GEOPOLITICAL GAMES BETWEEN WEST AND RUSSIA – EXPERT Moldova is being deliberately drawn into geopolitical games between the West and the Russian Federation, believes Director of the independent Moldovan Institute of Euro-Integration and Political Studies Dr. Viorel Cibotaru, an expert in strategic management, globalization and social communication strategies.

The expert said at the news conference at Infotag today that the events taking place in and around Moldova and the general situation here resemble a pre-war situation.

“The latest events in the world are indicating clearly that a real war will begin soon, and the heated atmosphere between the powers may affect Moldova, too. If we really have nothing to be afraid of and if no combat actions are expected, then why on earth is Ukraine digging a deep ditch along the border with the Transnistrian region? This is the Republic of Moldova’s international border, isn’t it? So, it would be interesting to know if the Ukrainian authorities agreed upon such actions with Chisinau”, said Viorel Cibotaru.

He thinks that possible military actions between Chisinau and Tiraspol “will not be in favor of the Moldovan national army because we have less soldiers and armaments. But despite all apprehensions felt by the Moldovan civil society, our government, obeying the orders coming from external forces, is moving exactly in such direction”.

In his belief, Moscow should not be regarded as a potential initiator of an armed conflict with the West because Russia has many other problems to handle.

“The Russian Federation is currently busy tackling the consequences of the peaceful annexation of the Crimea. The Western sanctions are forcing the Russian leadership to look for a way out of a possible economic crisis. So, it is obvious that the situation, glowing around the Transnistrian region, is the job of those in the United States and the European Union who stand behind taking the decisions”, said the expert.

Viorel Cibotaru thinks that the situation here is being heated to distract the public’s attention from other problems aggravating in the economic and social spheres.

“The country will be electing a new parliament soon [November 30], and it is obvious that the current authorities are not able to win the elections because the number of citizens angry at the incumbent ruling coalition is growing constantly. But in the conditions of a boiling conflict, it is much easier to rig elections! If an election outcome is not in favor of the current rulers, they can easily declare the result as null and void and appoint a date for another election. The current authorities certainly realize that this is their only chance to remain in power and at the public trough”, stated Viorel Cibotaru.

Afghan war veteran Victor Carpov also believes that the situation in Moldova is being made red-hot deliberately.

“Foreign instructors are coming into the republic, and are already training Moldovan special-service officers. What for is all this being done if we are not preparing to war? We all are participants in a business project wanted by business tycoons, not the grassroots”, said Karpov.
