NUMBER OF VOTERS GROWS IN MOLDOVAN MENTAL HOSPITALS – IDOM

02 december, 2014
NUMBER OF VOTERS GROWS IN MOLDOVAN MENTAL HOSPITALS – IDOM The number of people in Moldovan mental hospitals, who have voted at the November 30 parliamentary elections, went up almost twofold against 2010 elections. The data was presented by the Moldovan Institute for Human Rights (IDOM) as a result of monitoring, conducted on the Election Day in institutions of this type.

IDOM Director Vanu Jereghi said at the Tuesday’s news conference at Infotag that 1038 of 2260 patients of mental institutions voted at the current elections.

“We see a considerable improvement in the number of people, who voted. This is very good, as each citizen of the country has the right to vote, unless the court decided the opposite”, said Jereghi.

According to him, some candidates have visited mental hospitals to talk to patients and to carry out election campaign, but administration of some institutions prohibited them the entrance.

The IDOM Director said that the voting has been conducted with violations. Some patients had no chance to vote, because they did not know they should be included in additional lists.

According to him, many directors of country’s mental hospitals, as well as polling stations heads were surprised by the fact that these patients have the right to vote.

The IDOM recommends the Central Election Commission to study possibilities of opening polling stations in institutions of this type, to instruct members of the election committee about conditions for voting of this category of people and to carry out an information and training campaign on election process in mental institutions.
