PLATFORM “DIGNITY AND JUSTICE” CALLS ON CITIZENS TO COME OUT FOR MASSIVE PROTESTING

PLATFORM “DIGNITY AND JUSTICE” CALLS ON CITIZENS TO COME OUT FOR MASSIVE PROTESTING The Civil Platform “Demnitate si Adevar” [DA, “Dignity and Justice”] has called upon citizens of Moldova to come out for a massive street action of protest to be held in Chisinau on May 3.

One of DA leaders, journalist Angela Arama stated at a news conference in Infotag today that the current authorities overtly ignore the Moldovan civil society’s demands.

“They have not fulfilled even a single of the demands that were formulated at the previous protest action held on April 5. We have no way out except continuing the protesting. We shall continue defending our rights next May 3”, said Angela Arama.

She read out main demands included in the DA Declaration:

* Unconditional return of the 1 billion euros that was stolen from Moldovan banks [Banca de Economii a Moldovei (BEM, savings bank), Banca Sociala and Unibank] by the incumbent country rulers;

* Unconditional dismissal of the leaderships of the Prosecutor General’s Office, the National Anti-Corruption Commission, the Superior Council of Magistrates, the Appeals Court, the Council for Competition Protection, the Customs Service, and to launch real reforming of these agencies;

* Immediate stoppage of anti-democratic attacks against press freedom and independence of journalists, and putting an end to the Mafioso strategy of closing down undesirable television channels.

Former Deputy Prime Minister Valentin Dolganiuc, a member of Moldova’s first Parliament, said that the incumbent authorities, acting in concert with certain opposition forces, keep robbing the Moldovan people, ignoring their rightful demands.

“They have railroaded the 2015 State Budget in secret from the civil society, whereas the so-called ‘opposition’ failed to find 26 signatures to try and express a vote of no confidence in this Government. We can’t further tolerate all this. It is necessary to sweep away all of then – the Parliament and the Government and all those who dance attendance on them”, stated Dolganiuc.

Moldovan political scientist Dr. Igor Botan, Chairman of the Association for Participatory Democracy (ADEPT), stressed that it is necessary to begin massive actions of protest to put an end to the incumbent authorities’ anti-democratic deviations.

“For example, they recently passed a law on the financing of political parties and movements, according to which parliamentary parties will be receiving funding from the State Budget starting from 2016. Yes there is such a norm in democratic countries, but in Moldova the incumbent rulers are thus seeking to ensure an extra funding for themselves. And all this is being done in a country where, judging by latest opinion polls, political parties are standing on the lowest place in terms of the population’s trust in them!” exclaimed the political scientist.

One of the protest organizers, public activist Andrei Nastase called upon compatriots to solidarity. He stressed that the May 3 protesting is “an initiative that has come from below”.

“We have no financing for the protesting. We do not represent whatever political party. Many people are saying to us they would like to join the action, but they have no organized transport to bring them to Chisinau. The grassroots should come to comprehend that they have to organize their participation themselves no matter their life outlooks, political orientation, ethnicity or the languages they speak. Protesting is the only means we have. We have no other leverage to influence on these authorities”, stated Nastase.
