ENVIRONMENTALISTS OUTRAGED BY STATE OF ENVIRONMENT IN MOLDOVA Public ecologic associations “Chisinau Ecological Movement” Viitorul Verde, Ecosfera, Bios and Habitat are outraged at the state of environment in Moldova and that authorities are indifferent toward this situation.

“Chisinau Ecological Movement” Chairman Vladimir Garaba said at press conference in Infotag that the Government does not care about the environment, as a result, the country occupies one of the last places in Europe in contamination of ground and surface waters, land degradation, forests and urban green spaces.

“The EU insists on the Moldovan legislation harmonization with the European environmental directives stipulated by the Association Agreement with the EU. But we do not do anything, although our regulations in this area are outdated”, he said.

Bios Director Valentin Ciubotaru said that there are no data on the status of water, soil and air in Moldova and their monitoring is not carried out.

“The 2015 year is the national year of soil, and our agrarian country is in a deplorable situation. Environmental protection is a priority in the EU. And Moldova does not even prepare specialists in the irrigation field”, he noted.

According to environmentalists, the soil condition is unsatisfactory to 90% of the agricultural fund areas. The area of eroded soil over the past 30 years has increased by almost 230 thousand hectares. Over the last four years as much as 1.6 tons of waste was thrown on the territory of Purcel abandoded qyarry in Chisinau.

Viitorul Verde Chairman Dumitru Arion said that because of the corruption problem in the country, about 40 thousand lei did not enter the budget for violation of legislation in the field of ecology.

“Environmental competent authorities do not ensure compliance with environmental legislation, thereby decreasing green spaces, the temperature rises in the city and the population is in stress. Air quality, humidity and shading are important for citizens, because otherwise they fall ill, suffer from allergies”, he said.

Dumitru Arion also said that on Monday environmentalists will give to the Prosecutor General’s Office and to the National Anti-Corruption Center documents about corruption in illegal buildings in park areas and will require compliance with the constitutional provisions on the environment protection.
