HUMAN RIGHT ACTIVIST CALLS ON DIPLOMATIC CORPS TO PUT PRESSURE ON UKRAINE FOR FIGHT AGAINST CORRUPTION AND REDUCTION OF TARIFFS

The diplomatic corps should help the Ukrainian people appeal to President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko with a letter recommending to start of a full-scale fight against corruption in the country and to bring the tariffs for public utilities to the level of 2013 - says Ukrainian human rights activist, chairman of the Dnipropetrovsk regional children's public organization “Dopomozhemo Dіtyam” Nikolai Kozhushko.

On Wednesday he said at a press conference in Infotag that a new information campaign begins with the main goal to reach four objectives in Ukraine: the fight against corruption, reduction of tariffs for public utilities, protection of children’s rights as well as the provision of humanitarian assistance to children in the zone of the antiterrorist operation in Donbas.

“Currently Ukrainian citizens have to pay for utility services to 70% of their income and if they do not pay off the debt within 3-4 months they can be arrested and their apartments can be put up for sale”, said human rights activist.

According to him a full-scale fight against corruption is not seen in Ukraine and those stained in corruption and Euromaidan crackdown nominate their candidates on lists of parties in local elections.

Kozhushko said several such candidate had been identified at that the upcoming elections in Dnipropetrovsk region including the former mayor of Dnipropetrovsk Nikolay Shvets who was involved in the illegal sale of 40 apartments for orphans and the former first deputy mayor of Dnipropetrovsk Anatoly Krupski who had been fired for corruption as the city budget received 30 million hryvnias less.

He noted that this is far from the complete list of corrupt officials who are trying to return to power.

“I do not understand why political “titushky” (gangsters) come to power in Ukraine again”, says the human rights activist.
He announced the start of an information tour about the CIS countries, Europe and the United States to explain the real situation in Ukraine in terms of the fight against corruption and the need to conform the real incomes of the population to tariffs for public utilities.

The head of the non-governmental organization expressed his gratitude to President Nicolae Timofti and Moldovan citizens for the provision of 1 ton of relief supplies and 13 thousand lei that were sent to Donbas children who reside in the zone of the antiterrorist operation from July 2014 to March 2015.
