GRT HEAD SAYS POLITICIANS ARE PRESSING ON GAGAUZIA ELECTRONIC MEDIA IN RUN-UP TO ELECTIONS

15 december, 2015
GRT HEAD SAYS POLITICIANS ARE PRESSING ON GAGAUZIA ELECTRONIC MEDIA IN RUN-UP TO ELECTIONS Anna Harlamenko, Director of the Gagauzia Radio and Television public company, maintains that politicians are already pressing on the regional electronic mass media and on their administrations as elections to the Gagauzia Popular Assembly [legislature] are approaching.

Harlamenko stated at a news conference at Infotag today that standing behind this campaign of discrediting the GRT and personally her is Mr. Dmitrii Konstantinov, Speaker of the Gagauzia Popular Assembly, who uses the GRT Supervisory Board for this purpose.

In her words, the Board, which is called to monitor the quality of GRT programs, “has become a bludgeon in the hands of our rulers”.

“This heavy bludgeon is used for suppressing and ruining all journalist inquiries into the shady activities of Gagauzia oligarchs. This struggle for the minds of voters is only gaining momentum as our regional parliamentary elections are approaching. And though the election is due in September 2016, pressure on the mass media has already begun”, said Anna Harlamenko.

The GRT Director underlined that after her reinstatement in office by decision of the court as recently as last November 4, she has already been fired from her post three times – by decisions of the Supervisory Board.

“They dig to find whatever possible pretexts to dismiss me or make official written reprimands”, stated Anna Harlamenko, who is convinced that there is yet one more serious reason of Dmitrii Konstantinov’s hostility towards her: she is the sister of Nikolai Dudoglo, ex-Mayor of Comrat, former candidate for Comrat Mayor, who is currently a member of the Moldovan Parliament from the Democratic Party.

“I am the only person from the Dudoglo team, who has managed to return to a high state post in Gagauzia. But the new regional authorities want to change everybody and everything in the region”, said Anna Harlamenko, the former Chairperson of the Gagauzia Popular Assembly.

In her words, the processing plant in Comrat town, belonging to the Konstantinov family, distils ethanol by nights.

“Waste products are poured into the Comrat sewage network and into surrounding rivers and lakes thus ruining the environment and people’s health. When the streets of Comrat were flooded with sewage once again a month ago, GRT journalists made a video film about that. The film infuriated Konstantinov who has been behaving lately as a real king and master of whole Gagauzia”, stated Anna Harlamenko.

In her words, she sought support and protection of Bashkan [Governor] of Gagauzia Irina Vlah.

“We have met several times. Irina Vlah expressed her compassion and understanding of the situation. I asked her to interfere into the conflict-like situation, but nothing has been made yet”, said Harlamenko.

Infotag’s dossier: Anna Harlamenko worked at the television of Comrat in 1990-2000, including as its director last several years. She was Speaker of the Gagauzia Popular Assembly in 2008-2012. In 2013 she became Adviser to Moldovan Parliament Chairman on international relations and regional policy, and since 2014 – GRT Director.
