FORMER PRIME MINISTER ION STURZA THINKS THAT VLAD PLAHOTNIUC SEEKS TO HEAD GOVERNMENT…

FORMER PRIME MINISTER ION STURZA THINKS THAT VLAD PLAHOTNIUC SEEKS TO HEAD GOVERNMENT… Moldova’s former prime minister Ion Sturza presumes that oligarch Vlad Plahotniuc is doing his utmost to become the new head of the Moldovan Government.

Speaking at a news conference in Infotag on Thursday, Sturza said: “Vlad Plahotniuc controls the whole political system in the country, and not only this. He has solved all his tactical problems. His main opponents are behind bars. He has guaranteed for himself a relative neutrality from behalf of Moldova’s development partners. So, why not becoming a prime minister?” questioned Ion Sturza.

He said it would be good to make “all puppeteers and manipulators come out of shade and make them work openly by heading serious state institutions”.

“May be they are really worth something. Then why not giving them a possibility to show themselves? Let them demonstrate openly, not under the table, what they really can,” said Sturza, and stressed that the candidacy of Vlad Plahotniuc is unacceptable for the prime ministerial post.

Asked to explain why, Sturza replied that in such case Moldova will have no possibility to change the present-day state of things here: “I don't think that his model of developing businesses or his behavior matrix should be used at the level of government. I will not comment on this topic any more”.

Answering journalists’ questions, Ion Sturza refuted rumors that he may allegedly be nominated as a candidate for prime minister.

“I’ve held meetings with party leaders and with President Timofti. I know the situation in Moldova too well to talk seriously of accepting the prime ministerial post”, said Ion Sturza.

Infotag’s dossier: Presently, Ion Sturza runs a number of successful businesses, in particular two investment foundations. Their assets, reaching 200 million euros, work in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, including in Moldova.

…BUT SAYS THE PRIME MINISTERIAL POST WILL BE OFFERED TO IURIE LEANCA…

The former Moldovan Prime minister until early 2015, Iurie Leanca will be again nominated as candidate for the prime ministerial post, Ion Sturza stated at his news conference in Infotag on Thursday.

In his opinion, on Friday, December 18, President Nicolae Timofti will sign a Decree on nominating Iurie Leanca as candidate for prime minister, and will thus entrust the formation of a new government to him.

“I presume also that the new government may well be approved already next week – by the votes of the Democrats, Liberals and some Communists and Liberal Democrats. Under the threat of an early election, they may well decide to vote for such government”, said Ion Sturza.

At the same time, Sturza believes that Moldova’s chief oligarch Vlad Plahotniuc, keeping all political processes in the country under his control and influence, will hardly give up his desire to become a prime minister.

“But in such case, government will not be approved, and after the New Year holidays Plahotniuc’s candidacy will all the same be nominated. I’ve had a meeting with President Timofti. He confessed that he is being subjected to an unprecedented pressure, including from behalf of his former colleagues from the judiciary system. The President said he does not want to be damned by all citizens of Moldova, so he will not nominate Plahotniuc. But Nicolae Timofti feels very hard. He needs very much the support of the civil society, politicians and Moldova’s international partners”, said Ion Sturza.

Answering journalists’ questions, Sturza said that there certainly are honest people, good enough to be included into new government, people who can make much good for the republic.

“I know such people. But many of them are already abroad and don't wish to come back home. Many of them do not any more believe in the project “Republic of Moldova”. They have become advocates of Moldova’s unification with Romania, like are approximately two million citizens who are on their way to becoming unionists”, said the former premier.

Ion Sturza called the current situation in Moldova as “very sad… and it keeps deteriorating”.

“In all countries there are selfish interests, corruption and thefts. But there is a borderline behind which there stand national interests and which may not be overcome. In Moldova, there is no such borderline any more, like there is no morality, ethic or honor. What state can we talk about if somebody has monopolized the State’s right to issue laws, control borders and manage the banking system?” questioned Ion Sturza.

Infotag’s dossier: Ion Sturza was born on May 9, 1960 in the Pirjolteni Village (Calarasi Raion). He graduated from the Department of Economics of Moldova State University. On February 19, 1999 then-President of Moldova Petru Lucinschi appointed Sturza – then-Deputy Premier and Minister of Economy – as Prime Minister. However, Sturza remained on that post only until December 1, 1999.

He then left Moldova and went to Romania. Following the privatization of Rompetrol Company, in which Sturza was Vice-President, he established two investment foundations – the Fribourg East Investment and the Green Light Invest. Their assets are working in the economies of Central and Eastern European countries. The foundations’ resources are invested by means of direct owning of parcels in businesses and are allotted as loans for development, and placed in the issuers’ securities quoted at the markets of the United States, Germany, Brazil, Japan and Romania.

…AND THAT NBM LEADERSHIP RESIGNATION WAS ORGANIZED FOR PREVENTING IMF MEMORANDUM SIGNING

The resignation of the National Bank of Moldova top leadership was aimed at preventing the signing of new Memorandum with the International Monetary Fund for the sake of preserving the status quo, believes former Premier Ion Sturza.

He said on Thursday that submitting of resignations by NBM President Dorin Dragutanu and Deputy President Marin Molosag on September 21 was a fictitious action designed to prevent improvement of the situation in the country and its returning to normal.

“We have to understand that the IMF Memorandum focuses primarily not on natural gas or electricity tariffs, but on a tough control over the banking system, conducting of an international audit in banks and bringing shareholders of the three leading banks from shadow to light”, Sturza said.

Former prime minister said that actions in this direction were not in the interest of those, who controls the captured Moldova, thus these resignations were artificially provoked.

“What resignation can we talk about? Nobody has gone nowhere”, Sturza said, making clear that the NBM never intended to go away.

From his point of view, the normalization of the situation in the banking sector, the addressing of the issue with shareholders’ transparency may in fact mean even the nationalization of stakes from shareholders, who do not want to give any information about them.

“The three problematic banks must have not been liquidated, they must have been nationalized”, he said.
