NUMBER OF GAS STATIONS IN CHISINAU EXCEEDS NORM BY 95 UNITS – ENVIRONMENTALISTS

NUMBER OF GAS STATIONS IN CHISINAU EXCEEDS NORM BY 95 UNITS – ENVIRONMENTALISTS The number of gas stations in Chisinau exceeds the scheme of their location, approved by the Municipal Council in 2011, by 95 units, it was announced at a press conference in Infotag by director of the Chisinau environmental movement Vladimir Garaba.

According to him, the document envisaged the construction of 37 petrol stations, in addition to the 81 that at that time had already existed in the capital.

“Now there are 217 filling stations in the city. At that, the new ones grow up literally overnight. The requirements regarding the distance between stations, the legitimacy of a new gas station in the area and the number of cars that can use its services are not taken into account”, said Garaba.

He noted that for the gas station construction, one needs the environmental experts’ opinions and the local residents’ consent but builders do not often have them.

“The form of the residents’ consent is rather blurred, the law does not describe a specific document by which the residents can express their agreement or disagreement”, said the ecologist.

As an example, he cited the case of the violations of the gas station construction in Alunelul Park in Sculeanca District. He noted the local authorities have stopped the construction work but the tenants claim that the Xpetrol Grup company continues to build at night. A resident of one of the nearby houses, Lidia Turcanu criticized the local authorities on behalf of all the tenants.

"Our 17-storey house is located near the road. Many sick people live in it, but there is no place for a walk with children let alone the car exhaust. There is the only high school in Sculeanca, but children walk to school past the gas station. This is not a city of gas stations; we do not have to sacrifice our health for the sake of someone's income”, she said.

Director of the Agency for Inspection and Restoration of Monuments and member of the City Hall Ion Stefanita said, “The construction of gas stations is performed with the law violation”.

“The Jewish cemetery, next to which the building is being performed, is included in the state register of monuments, so the construction should be coordinated with the National Council of Historical Monuments of the Ministry of Culture. Economic agents must stop solving their problems on the phone and through corruption, because the city should develop according to the law, but not chaotically”, he said.

The experts proposed to solve the problem by stopping the issuance of licenses for the construction of gas stations, checking the status of the existing stations and their impact on the environment, and creating a new layout of the filling stations as well as finding new places for those stations that already have a license but the construction work has not yet started.
