ENVIRONMENTALISTS URGE LOCAL AUTHORITIES NOT TO CONTRIBUTE TO ENVIRONMENT DESTRUCTION Public association “Urban environmental movement” calls on Chisinau Primaria [city government] not to contribute to the environment destruction and intends to transfer to local authorities “The Black book of the environment”, which includes information on the situation in the city and suburbs, and is annually published.

The association Chairman Corneliu Mirza stated at the press conference at Infotag that the first book was published in 2014 and is annually updated.

According to him, on the occasion of the International Earth Day on April 22 a list of factors contributing to environmental pollution was published in the book.

“The first place – waste, which had been taken over five years to the dump Purcel on the outskirts of Chisinau; as much as 2 million tons of waste was gathered there. Local authorities should resume talks on the resumption of the activities on the waste dump in Tantareni, to upgrade it, so as not to pollute the environment and not to harm the local residents’ health”, stressed the ecologist.

He also believes that another threat factor is falling trees and destruction of lawns; parking lots and construction works are there. Among the hazards, Mirza called exhaust gases and deterioration of the situation on the Bic river; there are car wash and gas stations there.

“Partial cleaning of the river did not lead to improvement. Besides, the number of petrol stations on the river causes concern, and not only this problem. There are already 130 gas stations in Chisinau and the authorities of the capital intend to build another 100 gas stations”, he said.

Mirza believes that “local authorities should develop strategies for the environment protection, as well as plans for its improvement, and rehabilitation of green spaces”.

Dmitri Arion, a representative of the association noted that “namely local authorities are to be blamed for the deterioration of the situation, as they give authorization for construction works, they started cleaning of the Bic river, without developed plan and have not received permission from the environmentalists”.

There are no strategies to protect the environment; boundaries of parks and alleys are not set, this allows developers to build on green areas.

“We collaborate with councilors, who are fighting against illegal construction, but they are not always able to do something, because the municipal council does not listen to them”, said Arion.

He thinks that primaria's actions on cleaning illegal waste dumps are not working, because new dumps arise there again and again.

Environmentalists said they would send “The Black book of the environment” to local authorities, to the Parliament and to all agencies that can contribute to the environment improvement and protection.
