PROJECT ON SOCIAL INTEGRATION OF PEOPLE WITH HEARING AND VISUAL IMPAIRMENTS LAUNCHED IN MOLDOVA The Association of the Deaf of Moldova jointly with the “Infonet” Alliance of Community Centers for Access to Information and Training launched a project on preventing discrimination and on integrating people with hearing and visual impairments into the society.

 

Infonet Chairman Victor Koroli said at the Wednesday’s news conference at Infotag that the project is aimed at reducing the phenomenon of discriminating people with hearing and visual impairments, improvement of their social integration and promotion of their special necessities in the society.

 

“The ratification of the UN convention on rights of people with disabilities and the adoption of the law on their social integration created a normative basis and foundation for a considerable progress in the field of people with disabilities’ participation in social, political, cultural life”, he said.

 

According to him, a recently conducted research showed that in Moldova the right to public and political life of this category of people is not honored (44.5% respondents) or is partially honored (36.2%), while people with mental and physical disabilities (68% and 66%) are most often subject to discrimination in different life spheres.

 

Koroli said that partners of the project proposed to develop and publish a work “Person from the World of Silence”. Also, a 15-minute film “Person from the world of sounds. Guide for Understanding People with Visual Impairments” will be shot and broadcasted on national television.

 

“The project started on April 1 and will last till November 30, while its budget accounts for US$24.6 thousand. Money was allocated by the Soros-Moldova Fund within the Civil Equality and Participation Program”, Koroli said.

 

Director of the Program Anna Coretchi said that the Fund has conducted a grant program for combating discrimination in different fields.

 

According to her, the aim is to contribute to employment, access to public services and goods, combating of discrimination on the grounds of disability. 38 projects were submitted to the contest, while the jury selected 6 best.

 

Representative of the Moldovan Society of Blind People National Information and Rehabilitation Center Viorel Zaporojan told about the method of dubbing films for people with visual impairments.

 

According to him, the future film and its personages will be dubbed in a way that people with visual impairments to understand what the film is about.
