LAWYER ANNA URSACHI CALLS ON MILITARY TO ABSTAIN FROM PARADE ON SATURDAY

LAWYER ANNA URSACHI CALLS ON MILITARY TO ABSTAIN FROM PARADE ON SATURDAY Prominent lawyer Anna Ursachi has called on the Moldovan military not to take part in the military parade, being organized by the authorities on the occasion of the 25th independence anniversary, and on citizens – to come into Chisinau's main square and take part in the action “I’m Not Afraid”.

Ursachi stated at a news conference at Infotag Friday that against the background of the desperate poverty suffered by most of Moldova citizens, such a grandiose celebration of the event – with an international military parade, pompous concerts and fireworks – is just inappropriate like a feast during the plague.

“This is going to be a sad holiday. The people live in poverty. To equip a child for school, parents need to spend a lot of money. I guess it would be wiser to give, say, 6,000 lei to such families for each schoolchild instead of the celebration expenditures”, believes Anna Ursachi.

She dispelled apprehensions that if 50 or more protesters gather in the main square on Saturday, the police may force them out of the place.

“As a lawyer, I am telling you that this would be against the law because the law does not stipulate how many people are permitted to take part in a spontaneous action of protest”, said Anna Ursachi.

According to her, the Ministry of the Interior has drawn up a list of personalities whom the police must bar from entering the main square on August 27. To prevent such possible actions of protest, the police will start arresting such undesirable citizens already on Friday night.

Anna Ursachi maintains that to make the military parade look more impressive, the Moldovan authorities have specially purchased military equipment to a gigantic sum and have rented three very expensive concert platforms from Romania.

“The organization of the military parade in the heart of Chisinau and of the whole celebration program is being run by the [Plahotniuc’s] Democratic Party. But all this would be impossible without a co-participation of the Liberal Party, in particular of Chisinau Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca [First Deputy Chairman of the Liberal Party], who willingly gave the square for this, and without Defense Minister Anatol Salaru [a Liberal], who has organized the military parade”, believes Anna Ursachi.

Asked if she believes it would be a disgrace for Moldova, if the protesters spoil the celebration in the main square tomorrow, Anna Ursachi replied that “Moldova has long been disgraced already”.

“When our very democratic and very pro-European authorities did not let our foreign partners investigate the bank fraud worth a billion euros, wasn’t it a disgrace? And to tell truth to foreign guests is a shame, right? If the police don't let citizens to the center of the Great National Assembly Square, this will be a real shame upon our authorities!” believes lawyer Anna Ursachi.
