PLATON EXTRADITION WAS DUE TO MOLDOVAN AND UKRAINIAN POWER STRUCTURES’ EFFORTS – LAWYER

PLATON EXTRADITION WAS DUE TO MOLDOVAN AND UKRAINIAN POWER STRUCTURES’ EFFORTS – LAWYER The swift extradition of Veaceslav Platon from Kiev to Chisinau became possible due to maximum coordination of actions by power structures of Ukraine and Moldova, with participation of first persons of the two countries, said well-known Russian lawyer Ilya Novikov, who participates in defending Veaceslav Platon together with his Ukrainian and Moldovan colleagues.

At the Thursday’s news conference at Infotag, he listed a set of gross violations in the process of his client’s extradition, admitted by the sides.

“A day before Platon is detained in Kiev, evidences of entrepreneur Ilan Shor appear in Chisinau. These became the basis for Ukrainian prosecutors. Shor, who has been kept in remand prison, is released. And in the same day the Sectorul Buiucani court of Chisinau issues the decision on Platon’s extradition. He is detained and placed in the Ukrainian Security Service remand prison. The detention operation was conducted by 20 special forces soldiers. When the decision of Ukraine’s deputy prosecutor general Yevgeny Yenin on Platon extraditing appears several days later, the entrepreneur is not allowed to challenge this decision in higher court. He is embarked on a plane and taken away under cover of the night”, the lawyer said.

He explained why persons, who are standing behind Platon’s extradition, decided not to wait for Interpol actions.

“The procedure of extradition by means of Interpol often takes weeks and even months. What a search through Interpol means? Strictly speaking, it is the introduction of data about the person in the organization’s database. While in case of Platon everything had to be made quickly”, Novikov said.

He pointed at the extreme haste at extradition with a tough violation of the law, as well as the political hidden motive.

“Here in Moldova, a scandal with stealing a billion from banks is being built up. It seems that the authorities are trying to associate Platon with this case”, the lawyer said, adding that the extradition has been done without any judicial control, which actually should obligatorily be applied in such cases.

According to him, the admitted violations will become reasons for addressing to the European Court of Human Rights. Novikov also regards the refusal to recognize Platon’s Ukrainian citizenship as violation of law.

“Currently, the moods of discontent with authorities are strong in Ukraine, as it cannot achieve the extradition of Ukrainian citizens, who are in hands of Russian structures. The Platon’s story will also cause a social resonance. It seems that any Ukrainian citizen may be extradited upon agreement of influent persons”, the lawyer said.

He promised to closely engage in this case, emphasizing two main goals: to preserve Platon’s life and to ensure his soonest releasing.

Lawyer Anna Ursachi said that Platon was brought to Chisinau at night by a private plane in violation of all the established procedures.

“According to Platon, he was brought to Moldova in a luxurious 12-sit plane. Only two people have such aircrafts in Moldova: Vlad Plahotniuc and Ilan Shor”, she said.
