DOCUMENTARY FILMS TO BE SCREENED AT LESSONS IN MOLDOVAN SCHOOLS

15 september, 2016
DOCUMENTARY FILMS TO BE SCREENED AT LESSONS IN MOLDOVAN SCHOOLS In the new academic year, several educational institutions of Moldova will include in their curriculum a new discipline – “O lume de vazut” [One World in Schools], which, among others, includes documentary film screening, said Director of the OWH-Studio Virgil Margineanu on Wednesday.

According to him, the project is being implemented by the OWH-Studio jointly with PEN-Moldova with the support of the international organization People in Need.

“We are glad that after studying our project, the Education Ministry included it as an optional subject. All the necessary documents have been elaborated, as well as the teaching methodology; a reference book for teachers was published, which has as an attachment a CD with ten documentary films. With time, the list of films will be replenished”, Margineanu said.

He stressed that the process of teaching the discipline implies watching of films on different topical themes, as well as their discussion.

“The main goal is to inculcate to schoolchildren and lyceum students love for art, to raise them on good films. This should contribute both to the education and to documentary film revival. The documentary sphere in Moldova is in a stand by regime now both in terms of production and consumption. All of us are guilty of this, thus it is necessary to take efforts for changing the situation”, the filmmaker said, appreciating the Education Minister’s openness to cooperation.

The Ministry representative Natalia Grau said that the object “One World in Schools” is being taught in 73 educational institutions as optional discipline.

“We got convinced in high interest of teachers and students in a new object. After watching films, a discussion is organized, in which students are taking active part. We hope the discipline has a future as it is demanded”, Grau said.

Falesti Mihai Eminescu Lyceum teacher Elena Mardari confirmed interest in this object.

“The teaching of a new subject allows us to keep up with the times. At lessons, schoolchildren seek answers to the questions they have, are watching films with a great interest. There are cases, when they try to make films by themselves. Children became more open, they are coming with pleasure to these lessons”, the teacher said.

Virgil Margineanu said that one of the project authors’ goals is to raise the interest to cinema.

“Unfortunately, Moldova faces a situation when there is no demand for good movies, including the document films. We can see that the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland managed to revive this interest. People are gladly going to cinema, film halls are full. We also have to come to this gradually: to revive the demand, to make Moldova a producer and consumer of good films”, the filmmaker said.
