ORGANIZATIONS CALL CITIZENS TO BOYCOTT ELECTIONS

15 september, 2016
ORGANIZATIONS CALL CITIZENS TO BOYCOTT ELECTIONS Some Moldovan civil society organizations are calling citizens to boycott the October 30 presidential election.

Vasile Postolache of the Civil Control Coalition stated at a news conference at Infotag today that the changes in the Constitution, pertaining to the form of electing president, could be made in only two ways – either by the vote of minimum 68 deputies in the Moldovan Parliament [of 101], or by holding a nationwide referendum.

“Therefore, the March 4 decision passed by the Constitutional Court was illegitimate and non-constitutional”, stated Postolache.

The activist remarked that instead of safeguarding the Main Law, the Moldovan Constitutional Court defends the interests of a known group of interested personalities and thus promotes Moldova’s remaining a ‘captured state’.

Armen Atayan of the Femida human right organization stated that the Constitutional Court had exceeded its plenary powers. This institution is supposed to play a totally different role in the life of the society, for which it has been invested with other plenary powers that do not permit the CC Judges to re-write laws or change the electoral system as they did last March 4.

“If the presidential election does take place, then the citizens’ demands about justice and honesty will sound simply illogical. We may find ourselves in a vicious circle, in which both the authorities and citizens participate in violating the law”, believes the Femida activist.

In the opinion of the Chairperson of the Moldovan Women’s Union, Tatiana Bujoreanu, the presidential election will not solve the problems of provincial schools closure, or youth migration, or social allowances.

“The Union calls on all civil society organizations, all citizens to boycott the election. It is only by acting together that we can achieve the main goal – dissolution of the incumbent Parliament and the holding of a snap election”, said Bujoreanu.

Mihai Lupasco, Coordinator of the “Statehood of Moldova” Dialog Club, reminded that his organization has been warning the civil society yet since last May about “the potential for conflict that has accumulated in the country”.

In his opinion, there is a risk that already on the second day after the electoral victory of a candidate from the power camp, a “Maidan” may be started in Chisinau by the opposition. An analogous situation may develop in case victory is won by an opposition candidate because in such case the other side will start talking of “a hand of Moscow”.

“The human masses’ determination for resolute actions could be observed last August 27 during the celebration of the Republic of Moldova’s 25th independence anniversary”, said Mihai Lupasco.

Infotag’s dossier: The word ‘maidan’ means ‘square’, ‘marketplace’ in Russian and Ukrainian. The Kiev Maidan, which is the central square in Ukraine’s capital, is a new political term that means the events the place has seen since late 2013 and practically throughout 2014.
