PSRM CHAIRMAN DODON MAINTAINS LEAD AMONG POTENTIAL PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES - OPINION POLL... MP Igor Dodon, Chairman of the opposition Party of Socialists, has the highest popularity rating among all potential candidates for the presidential post, as per the results of the opinion poll called "Vox Populi - September 2016: Citizens' Opinions about Presidential Election", which were presented at Infotag on Thursday.

The research was carried out by the Association of Sociologists and Demographers (ASDM) on September 2-10 among 1,179 adult residents of 77 various-type populated areas across Moldova. The pollsters are saying that error should not exceed В±3%.

Association Chairman Victor Mocanu said that citizens were asked whom they would vote for had the presidential election been held next Sunday, and they gave the following answers: for PSRM leader Igor Dodon - 29% (among those who have definitely decided to go to the polls and know whom they will vote for - 36.2%), for Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) Chairperson Maia Sandu - 12.9% (16.1%), for DA Platform Andrei Nastase - 11.1% (13.9%), for Democratic Party leader Marian Lupu - 9.9% (12.4%), for Chairman of the European People's Party of Moldova (EPPM) Iurie Leanca - 6.5% (8.1%), for Our Party candidate Dmitry Ciubasenco - 2.9% (3.6%), and for Liberal Party Chairman Mihai Ghimpu - under 1%.

In the first case, the question was "closed" i.e. citizens named their favorite potential candidates themselves. And in the second case, they named a candidate from the list of names offered to them to choose from.

The research revealed that the local population is on the whole poorly informed about the approaching presidential election. Only 73% of interviewed citizens were able to name the election date [October 30], over 15% named other dates, and 12% stated they don't care about the event.

Only 18% respondents perceived positively the Constitutional Court's decision of last March 4 on a return to a direct all-nation electing of presidents in Moldova, and 22% think that the consequences of such a return will be negative, 13% are indifferent to the Court decision, and 4% haven't even heard about it.

Asked what qualities a president must have, the respondents mentioned: competence - 34%, patriotism - 31%, modesty - 30%, resolution - 29%, good manners - 26%, leadership - 24%, and 6% each said that a president must be charismatic, ready to self-sacrifice, and must have a good sense of humor.

However, only 17% citizens are constantly thinking of the presidential election. Forty percent Moldovans believe that a direct election should promote the solution of accumulated problems, while 46% think otherwise - that problems will remain and will only aggravate.
