TRANSNISTRIAN CONFLICT VETERANS DEMAND AUTHORITIES TO ABIDE BY LAW ON FREE TRAVELING IN PUBLIC TRANSPORT The Ialoveni regional organization of the Union of War Veterans demands from the Moldovan authorities to comply with the Law on free traveling in municipal public transport for veterans, threatening with protest actions.

The organization Chairman Gheorghe Staci said at the Tuesday’s news conference at Infotag that according to the 2014 law, veterans have the right to travel in public transport, by train and plane free of charge, but this law is ignored in Moldova.

According to him, when veterans are buying ticket on station, it is sold to them without any data, without stamp, the fact that prevents from receiving of compensation for the travel. Besides, often veterans are recommended to talk to the driver and travel without ticket.

“Most of problems appear with bus drivers, who refuse to put up in the transport the list of categories of people, who have the right to free traveling. Also, at demonstrating to them documents about participation in military conflict, drivers refuse to transport passengers, ignore them, do not stop at the demand”, Staci said.

Veterans have many times addressed to the Justice Ministry, to the Government, the Parliament, but all the documents have been sent to the Transport Ministry, which does not control how passenger transporting companies obey the law.

Staci called on Moldovan authorities to fulfill veterans’ demands and make sure that their right to travel in public transport for free is being obeyed. He said the authorities have a week to think, while after this protest actions will start.
