ACADEMY PRESIDENT AND HIS WIFE RETURN ILLICITLY ACQUIRED MONEY – REBEL INSTITUTE DIRECTOR

President of the Moldovan Academy of Sciences (MAS) Academician Gheorghe Duca and his wife Maria Duca, Chancellor of the Academy’s University, have returned to the State the money they had illicitly received from the State Budget, Dr. Ilie Donica, Director of the Moldovan Academy of Sciences (MAS) Institute of Horticulture and Food Technologies, stated at a news conference at Infotag today.

In his words, the 759.6 thousand lei, which the Ducas had received in salaries and premiums since 2014 to date, were put on their payrolls with considerable violations. The Anti-Corruption Prosecution Service has confirmed this fact, but decided not to start a legal action into the affair because the spouses had returned a big part of the sum to the State Budget, namely 487.7 thousand lei, with the rest means to be deducted from their future earnings.

Donica reminded that Academician Duca holds 3 posts simultaneously: he is the President of the Academy of Science (main job), a professor in a university, and runs scientific researches in the MAS Institute of Chemistry. At all the three posts, he is paid three full-size salaries, though according to the law a person may not be paid at a second, third etc. post more than 50% of his salary at the main job.

“Last three years, Gheorghe Duca undertook 42 visits to foreign countries. Due to this circumstance, he has been absent from Moldova for not less than 100 days a year. Consequently, he could not read lectures in the university because of his absence, but that did not prevent Academician Duca, who is a Member of the Moldovan Government, from receiving full salary in the university”, said the opposition scientist.

Ilie Donica maintains that the Moldovan Prosecutor General’s Office practices double standards “because when a police officer is caught red-handed on a petty bribe, a criminal litigation is usually started. But in the case of the Ducas, nothing of the kind happens”, said the Institute Director.
