MOLDOVAN YOUTH GETTING INCREASINGLY INDIFFERENT TO POLITICS AND ELECTIONS The young generation in Moldova is losing interest to politics and are getting more reluctant to go to the polls, showed the opinion poll carried out by the iDATA company within the ProDEM project that is being implemented by the Hilswerk Austria International foundation with the assistance of the Austrian Development Agency and the ERSTE Foundation (Austria).

The poll was carried out on last December 16 through January 23 among 423 respondents aged 16 to 20 years residing in 11 populated areas of Moldova.

iDATA Executive Director Mihai Bolocan said at the news conference at Infotag today the poll has revealed that only 46% of young respondents are interested in the socio-economic situation in the country. And the rest are “slightly interested” or disinterested at all.

Namely, 12.8% respondents said they were very much interested with politics, 33.1% – interested, 41.1% – not very much, and 10.4% were totally indifferent to political problems or developments.

If an election (presidential, parliamentary or local) were held next Sunday, it would arouse the interest of only 46% respondents (including 48% women and 46% men).

Asked about the reasons why the youth are reluctant to go to polling stations, answers were quite different. Namely, 60% stated they have the right not to vote because voting is not compulsory, 57% said they were not informed about elections, 54% mentioned “the absence of conditions for voting”, 35% of the interviewed young people stated they had health problems, and approximately the same number complained that it is hard for them to reach polling stations.

Had an election been held next Sunday, 73% respondents would be ready to vote for a female candidate, 33% – for a candidate belonging to another nationality, 26% – for a candidate with limited capabilities, 6.4% – for a person with non-traditional sexual orientation, and 5.4% – for a candidate with a criminal past.
