CIVIL SOCIETY AND THE ACADEMIA URGE NOT TO AMEND EDUCATION SYSTEM The representatives of the Moldovan civil society and the academia are urging the Government and the Parliament not to accept the classification of fields of study in higher education, published on the government’s website.

Experts of the “Viitorul” [Future] Institute for Development and Social Initiatives (IDIS), Viaceslav Ionita said at Tuesday’s press conference that on February 22, the Government is going to consider draft amendments to the education system. He urged ministries and the Prime Minister, in particular, not to vote for the project but to wonder what they are voting for.

According to him, the project, which has been secretly published on the government’s website, does not contain such definition as teachers training, which contradicts to the Code of Education, Classification of international standards in the education system and the accreditation process of the National Agency for Quality Assurance in Vocational Training (ANACIP).

The expert believes that according to the published project, a person with two specialties will not be able to work in school in villages, and those who teach in universities will not be able to teach in lyceums.

Ionita provided the data that say that over the last 10 years the number of students decreased by more than 50 thousand.

“The project was developed by an unknown group of people to close colleges, and after school graduation students will go directly into the universities and to colleges. Thus, the number of students will increase. If the project is accepted, the education system will be destroyed in two years”, said Ionita.

He appealed to Prime Minister Pavel Filip and Moldovan Parliament Chairman Andrian Candu with the request to accept the project, which will was developed by a special commission for a long time and discussed with experts and civil society.

Academician Mitrofan Cioban aid that the new project propose to increase the period of study for the licentiate, but what for, if we do not know what will happen with the second and the third cycle of study?

“In other countries, such issues are discussed for a few years and only then decision are taken. Moldova has made a mistake, while learning from the experience of those countries where the colleges have been closed. If we take examples of each country, we will have nothing”, believes the academician.

The press conference participants believe that if the project, published on the government’s website, is approved the education system of the republic will be destroyed. They appealed to the country leaders with the letter, which was signed by more than 1.2 thousand people.
