DOMESTIC PRODUCERS ARE AGAINST ECOLOGICAL FEE LOWERING

The Speranta-Con Association of canned food producers and a number of other Moldovan producers - JLC, Gelibert and Aquatrade stand against the lowering of the ecologic fee by 50% starting from January 1.

At the Tuesday's news conference at Infotag, representatives of these companies said that the lowering of ecological fee is putting importers and local producers of canned food, soft drinks, milk and other type of products in unequal position. The law has been adopted by the Parliament in two readings, but has not been promulgated by the President.

Speranta-Con Chairman Stepan Golubciuc said that most domestic producers are also importing goods in package, paying to the state the ecological fee.

"However, these enterprises are sending a part of imports, for example juices, abroad and the package does not remain in Moldova", he said.

Since the Law on ecological fee entered into force, the special fund received around 2.5 billion lei over 10 years.

"We understand that this money was misused that is went not on ecology but for other purposes. Over this time, however, the country could have created a modern facility on processing packaging", Golubciuc said.

Press conference participants were reluctant to answer who lobbied the lowering of the ecological fee, which according to domestic producers provides advantages to importers. Indirectly, though, they made it clear that a major investor will benefit from this law, which will open a network of shops in Moldova soon.

Advantages the lowered ecological fee will bring to importers, will allow them strengthen their positions on the Moldovan market, which in practice will mean that Moldovan producers will lose a share of domestic market.
