ABS RECYCLING DIRECTOR SAYS AUTHORITIES DIDN’T INVEST A LEU IN SEPARATE WASTE COLLECTION IDEA

Neither central authorities, nor the Chisinau Primaria [city government] have invested even a single leu in separate waste collection, ABS Recycling Factory Director Sergey Balica reported at a press conference. The factory has been shut down since January 25.

Due to the lack of support from the local authorities the company found itself on the verge of bankruptcy and about 200 employees of the production department in Bubuieci will remain without earnings. What is more, there are representatives of large families among these employees.

“We are an apolitical structure. Our business is economic activity. Household waste sorting is unprofitable. Therefore, without any support from the capital’s administration (which is now the main waste supplier in the country) a private company may become bankrupt. The factory sorts 12 types of waste, including seven types of plastic waste. The ABS points operate throughput the country, including Balti and Orhei. The company also has a polymer production facility. Most of the inorganic waste is exported to Europe”, the businessman said.

He emphasized that a number of working groups on “the garbage problem” were established under the Chisinau Municipal Council immediately after the local elections.

“The waste management problem, as well as their subsequent disassembly into fractions isn’t an idle question for Chisinau as a megalopolis. During the meetings of the working groups, the independent experts set the price for the disassembly of one ton of waste – 260 lei. We are ready to discuss the price of 200 lei, though they considered it as an element of blackmail. We believe that the disassembly line is necessary. However, the situation is unlikely to improve. We are ready for partnership, compromises, and not engage in blackmail”, Balica said.

Chisinau Mayor Ion Ceban recently stated that he considers the ABS Recycling activity to be a profitable business”.
