OPINION POLL: MOST OF RM CITIZENS KEEP STANDING AGAINST MOLDOVA’S JOINING NATO

A majority of Moldova citizens stand against their country’s accession to the North Atlantic Alliance, as per the results of a sociological survey conducted by the CBS Research company commissioned by WatchDog.MD and the Moldovan Institute of Strategic Initiatives (IPIS).

According to the public opinion research results presented at a press conference on Tuesday, had a referendum on accession to NATO been held next Sunday, 54.4% interviewed citizens would vote against, 26.9% - for the accession, and 18.7% would not go to the polls.

As for Ukraine, 11.3% respondents believe that NATO should intervene into the conflict on the side of Ukraine, 40.8% are of the opinion that arms supplying is enough, 30.6% - that Ukraine should cope on its own, and 17.3% found it difficult to answer.

If a referendum on the unification of the Republic of Moldova and Romania took place next Sunday, 50.6% participants would vote “against”, 35.2% - for the unification, and the rest would not take part, or were uncertain.

Asked to choose between the European and the Eurasian vectors of development for Moldova, 55% respondents preferred the European Union, 22% - the Eurasian Economic Union, 11.8% were against both, and 11.3% found it difficult to answer the question.

The opinion survey was carried out on April 27 through May 6. It covered 1111 people eligible to vote, residing in dozens of various-type localities across the republic. The pollsters are saying the error should not be in the excess of ±2.8%.
