PARLIAMENT SCHEDULED CONSTITUTIONAL REFERENDUM ON REPUBLIC’S INTEGRATION INTO EUROPEAN UNION FOR OCTOBER 20

16 may, 2024

The Moldovan parliament has scheduled for October 20 a constitutional referendum on the integration of the republic into the European Union. 56 MPs from the ruling Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) voted in favor of this decision on Thursday evening.

The opposition Bloc of Communists and Socialists and independent MPs from the former Shor party (declared unconstitutional by a Constitutional Court ruling in June 2023) were strongly opposed. They are against both the referendum as a whole and against holding it on the same day as the presidential election. In their opinion, it gives an advantage to Maia Sandu, who will run in the elections to keep her mandate.

As INFOTAG previously reported, a month ago, on April 16, the Constitutional Court gave a positive opinion on the draft amendments to the Basic Law on European integration. A group of 46 MPs from the ruling Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) filed a request to the Constitutional Court. The court recognized that the initiative complies with the norms of the Constitution, including the limits of its revision.

The constitutional referendum will include the question: "Do you support the amendments to the Constitution in the context of Moldova's accession to the European Union?" instead of the originally envisaged "Do you support Moldova's accession to the European Union?".
