​AS OF FEBRUARY 1, MOLDOVA’S DEBTS STOOD AT 30.8% GDP, OR 3.2% LOWER THAN IN 2023 – MoF

As of this past February 1, the Republic of Moldova’s aggregate debt stood at 30.8% of the gross domestic product (GDP) i.e. 3.2% lower that on the same date in 2023.

According to the RM Ministry of Finance, on December 31, 2023 Moldova’s state debt constituted just over 104 billion lei, which was a historical maximum.

According to the Ministry, the reduction in state debt was due to a decrease in external debt by almost 386 million lei - to 63.9 billion lei. However, at the same time, there was an increase in domestic debt by almost 190 million lei, which as of February 1 amounted to 39.8 billion lei.

In the total public debt of Moldova, the share of internal debt is 38.4%, and external - 61.6%.

According to Government forecasts for 2024, the GDP of the Republic of Moldova is estimated at 336.8 billion lei, while GDP expectations for 2023 amount to just over 305 billion lei.
