PGO WILL CHALLENGE IN CONSTITUTIONAL COURT THE LAW PERMITTING TO FIRE PROSECUTOR GENERAL

25 august, 2021

The Moldovan Prosecutor General's Office has stated its resolute intention to challenge in the Constitutional Court the today's amendments to the Law on the Prosecution Service permitting to dismiss the Prosecutor General.

The PGO press service issued a new release saying that on Tuesday the Moldovan Parliament approved amendments "by ignoring transparency procedures and by ignoring the recommendations of the Venice Commission and other experts, and the opinions of interested agencies".

"These amendments may well trigger consequences that will bring a serious harm to the constitutional principles of an independent prosecution service and to the division of powers in a state. That's why the Prosecutor General's Office will address in the nearest days to the Constitutional Court with a request to analyze the constitutionality of the amendments to the Law on the Prosecution Service", said the document.

The press release was sent to mass media outlets a few minutes after the Parliament had approved the amendments. They will come into force since the moment of their publication in the Monitorul Oficial. Earlier, Prosecutor General Alexander Stoianoglo stated the PGO would be seeking through the Constitutional Court the law's suspension and later on - its cancellation.
