PAS WINS MAYORAL ELECTIONS IN 291 POPULATED AREAS, WHILE PARTY OF SOCIALISTS – IN 144

The Republic of Moldova’s ruling Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) has won mayoral elections in 291 populated areas, and the opposition Party of Socialists (PSRM) – in 144 cities and villages. Such are the preliminary results of the two rounds of Moldova’s nation-wide local elections held on November 5 and 19.

According to the alegeri.md website administered by the Association for Participatory Democracy (ADEPT), these two parties maintain lead both in terms of elected mayors and of elected deputies [councilors] of various-level Councils [local legislatures].

The PAS received 225 mayoral positions in the first round and 66 in the second. In total, this is 291 mandates, although party leader Igor Grosu says that PAS received 310 mandates. At the same time, PAS improved its result compared to the 2019 local elections. Four years ago, PAS, together with the DA Platform party, formed the ACUM Bloc, winning together 172 seats. This time, the DA Platform received 20 mayoral mandates, finishing in the eighth place.

The second place was taken by the Party of Socialists (PSRM), which received 144 mandates namely 103 in the first round and 41 in the second. In the 2019 elections, PSRM candidates won in 206 localities.

The third place was taken by independent candidates who won in 116 localities (in 2019 - 112 mandates).

In the fourth place is the European Social Democratic Party, whose candidates won in 103 localities. In the 2019 elections, the Democratic Party came first, winning 261 mayoral positions.

The top ten parties, proceeding from the results in the mayoral elections, include also the Party of the Development and Consolidation of Moldova (PDCM) - 48, the Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova - 34, the Renastere/Vozrojdenie [Revival] Party - 27, the DA Platform - 20, Respect Moldova - 19 and Our Party - 17 mayoral positions.
