PARLIAMENT SPEAKER IGOR GROSU SAYS BASIC POLITICAL AGREEMENT BETWEEN MOLDOVA AND RUSSIA DOES NOT WORK
The Speaker of Parliament, Igor Grosu, said during a program on the PROTV-Chisinau channel that the basic political treaty between Moldova and Russia is currently not working and may be terminated.
Answering a question about the provisions of the agreement "on strategic partnership between Moldova and the Russian Federation" - he said that "it is not working and the agreement may be terminated."
"This agreement is "dead" for Moldova in the context of Russian aggression against Ukraine. I don't remember such an agreement being terminated. But I promise to check. If this agreement still exists and has not been canceled, it is still dead. Because Russia cannot be considered a strategic partner," Grosu said.
He stressed that according to Moldova's National Security Strategy, "the Russian Federation is recognized as a threat to the country's security."
The basic political treaty between Moldova and Russia was signed on November 19, 2901 for a period of 10 years. In 2011, it was extended for another 10 years. In 2017, then-President Igor Dodon said that work would begin on a strategic partnership agreement between the two countries, which would replace the 2001 treaty. However, the work on the new document never started. In October 2021, during the visit of Moldovan Foreign Minister Nicu Popescu to Moscow, a joint statement was signed in which Moldova and Russia agreed to extend the term of the treaty.
