AS LONG AS WAR IN UKRAINE CONTINUES, ECONOMIC SITUATION IN MOLDOVA WILL BE HARD

24 june, 2022

As long as the war in Ukraine continues, the situation in the Moldovan economy will remain difficult, President Maia Sandu stated at the press briefing on Friday.

“Our country, together with all of Europe, is going through a difficult period because of the war launched by Russia against Ukraine. This war disrupted interstate ties, destroyed the peace of millions of Ukrainian citizens - our neighbors. This war is being waged on our borders. This drama, this catastrophe affects us as well. First of all, it affects the economy,” Sandu said.

According to her, the war in Ukraine was an additional shock after the pandemic crisis.

“There is not a single social or economic area that would not be affected by the war. Rising prices for oil products and natural gas, difficulties with the export of agricultural products, the closure of trade routes are the consequences of the war. These crises have external sources. And the instruments we have to counter them are limited. We do not produce energy or oil products in order to set prices ourselves, and attempts to limit them can lead to the disappearance of these goods from the market. Therefore, we are looking for other solutions to help citizens in this difficult situation,” the President said.

She stressed that the situation will not change overnight upon the granting of the candidate status, as there is a lot of hard work to be done. Sandu stressed that in order to correct the situation and return to normal life, it is necessary to achieve peace, which Moldova insists on.
