SEPTEMBER 16 DECLARED AS NATIONAL MOURNING DAY IN MOLDOVA DUE TO DEATH OF MIRCEA SNEGUR

The Saturday of September 16 has been announced in the Republic of Moldova as a National Mourning Day in connection with the decease of the country’s first President Mircea Snegur, incumbent head of state Maia Sandu wrote in social networks.

“It was with deep sorrow that I learned that the first President of the Republic of Moldova, Mircea Snegur, died last night. He lived during historical times and played an important role in promoting the independence, freedom and sovereignty of the country. Mircea Snegur will remain in our memory as a man who was at the cradle of the Independence of the Republic of Moldova,” Sandu wrote, expressing sincere condolences to the family, relatives and everyone who knew and cherished the deceased.

She reminded that Mircea Snegur concluded his address to the nation on August 27, 1991 with the words “Long live the independent Moldova!”

“That call united Moldovans during the years of the National Revival and will guide us to build a worthy future for our children and the Republic of Moldova,” President Sandu concluded.
