Chisinau, February 6 (Infotag). Moldova’s largest cable TV operator Sun TV is going to be transformed into Sun Comunications embracing the whole new spectrum of services.

Speaking at a press conference at Infotag on Friday, director of Sun TV Alexander Sirbu said the company has already started providing high-speed internet service and in 2004 is planning to commence an IP-telephony. Apart from that, it is soon going to launch a new social project – Sun Schools.

‘From a technological standpoint we are entering a new phase of business; thanks to the recent installation of fibre-optic cables and introduction of digital equipment, Sun TV has broaden its broadcast diapason to 860 mHz, made its cable network more reliable and improved the quality of signal. In total, since 1993 the company has invested in its modernization $10 mln,’ said Sirbu.

He also mentioned the new phase of relationship between the company and its shareholders saying that from now on, it is going to be coordinated by a new director general John Maxemchuk. In November 2003, the former founder of Sun TV – Metromedia International Telcell Inc. – had sold its controlling stake of 65% to Lekert Management Ltd.; the remaining stocks are now held by Moldovan company Neocom. In response to the questions regarding retranslated programs and copyrights, Sirbu said that the Sun TV’s broadcast is done in accordance with the active legislation.

‘With regards to the retranslated channels we have either direct agreements with the copyright holders or their exclusive representatives in Moldova.’

Commercial director of the company Serghei Lavrinenco said that presently Sun TV has over 30 thousand active customers. He also mentioned that nowadays the company is prepared to provide connection to 145 thousand flats in Chisinau of its total 200 thousand.

In the near future, Sun TV is planning to expand its service network towards Balti and other parts of Moldova.

John Maxemchuk, in his turn, noted that the new company would be providing the best possible service, including large number of channels, at affordable prices.

‘We will try to live up to the principle – best channels at best prices,’ said Sirbu.
