22.04.2005 RESURRECTED SOVIET-TYPE COMMUNIST PARTY DECLAIMS AGAINST GUUAM

Chisinau, April 22 (Infotag). Members of the brought back to life (after the fall of the Soviet Union) Moldova’s Soviet-type communist party – CPM-CPSU – are adamant that the GUUAM organization does not serve the interests of the Moldovan people and pursues a single purpose of disintegrating the post-Soviet commonwealth.

Speaking Friday at a news conference in Infotag, Vladimir Moskalev of the CPM-CPSU Central Committee said “the ruling party strayed on a wrong path having abandoned its pre-election program in attempt to impose a western type democracy on the Moldovan society. Today, Moldova is the most anti-Russian country of the entire CIS.”

A decision to change the foreign policy course must be taken via national referendum, he said.

“GUUAM has been created as a puppet for the United States pursuing strategic interests in the post-Soviet area. The GUUAM countries have been assigned the role of a “sanitary cordon” around Russia and no one really cares about (improving) living standards in these countries,” stressed Moskalev.

He also admitted that although Moldova must establish its own cultural and economic niche in the West, it should not do so by “proffering a begging bow.”

“Our move to the West may only be successful in tight partnership with the East and, first of all, with Russia. To promote exports we need industrial cooperation with our long-term partners,” held Moskalev.

“Acting as he is the Moldovan President splits the society and invites territorial disintegration.”

“The idea of creating a “resurrected” Communist Party has emerged after the ruling party went back on its pre-election promises and re-oriented the country towards the European Union and the NATO,” said Moskalev.

He also confirmed that the party members are now being subjected to a massive pressure from the government. “On April 12 a group of armed police broke into the home of Igor Cucera (the party leader), searched his apartment and confiscated all of the party-related documents, including lists of the party members with phone numbers and home addresses.”

“The arrest of an innocent man (Igor Cucera) is a clear manifestation of authoritarian despotism, and harassment of opposition. The information about Cucera at this point comes to us through his lawyer; we have reasons to fear that his case might be fabricated. His detention has been extended by another month,” said Moskalev.

In the near future, the new CPM is going to launch an appeal to all of Moldova’s political parties, NGOs, and activist groups to stop the dictatorship of the government.
