Chisinau, August 23 (Infotag). “Rehabilitation of those sectors in the Moldovan capital which have suffered from last week’s floods will require at least 3 months, provided the work financing is normal”, Mr. Oleg Onishenko, the Chairman of “Our Home is Chisinau” Association, stated during a news conference in Infotag today.

In his words, the help currently coming from the local authoriesis definitely inadequate to the gravity of the situation, and the Association is now acting as a mediator between flood victims and those individuals and organizations that wish to help them. The Association has called upon citizens and economic operators to provide material and monetary assistance to disaster-struck households.

The Association’s hotline (tel. 270947) has already received over a hundred telephone calls from those wishing to help.

This is the first action of such scale being realized since the organization’s establishment last October. In the past months, its activists had carried out several social projects aimed at rendering assistance to pensioners, at city reconstruction, cultural undertakings etc. All such actions are financed through means sacrificed by citizens.

Oleg Onishenko explained that the money to come from citizens will be used, first and foremost, for creating tolerable living conditions for those who have lost their homes, bearing in mind that winter is approaching.

Due to 2 torrential rains that attacked the republic last week, Chisinau became one of the biggest victims of the elements. Here, 40 private houses were inundated and are now unsafe for living in, and 6 houses collapsed. As a result, 180 people have been left roofless.
