22.09.2005 ADJUTA-CIVES ACCUSES ATTORNEY GENERAL OF BREACHING HUMAN RIGHTS LAW

Chisinau, September 22 (Infotag). Non-governmental organization Adjuta-Cives has issued statement accusing General Prosecutor Valeriu Balaban of violating national and international human rights law.

Speaking Wednesday at a news conference in Infotag AC representatives said “chaos and disorder have set in at the General Prosecutor’s Office since Valeriu Balaban was appointed head of this organisation.”

“None of his subordinates can take any decisions independently without prior consultations with the ‘chief’,” held the statement.

Adjuta-Cives claimed on June 10, 2005, “Balaban personally ordered Gheorghe Murgulet, the department chief, to release from the organized crime dept custody Boris Suvac, prison chief of the Branesti village, the Orhei District” describing this act as an “example of protectionism.”

The NGO went on to say that earlier Balaban had done similar favour to a certain Valery Efremov charged with bribery.

Adjuta-Cives activists said Balaban has been influenced by prosecutor Ion Diacov “on whose orders earlier a so-called Snegur group have been released from custody charged with multiple crimes including murder, and whose members are now back on a wanted list.”

Adjuta-Cives chairman Andrei Luchian confirmed a few days ago the Adjuta-Cives leaders received threats from Ion Diacov.
