26.04.2005 PARTY OF REFORMS RENAMED INTO LIBERAL PARTY

Chisinau, April 26 (Infotag). The Party of Reforms will no on be named Liberal Party, the organization’s 2nd Congress decided this past Sunday. The unanimously elected LP Chairman, Mihai Ghimpu, told Infotag today the party’s fundamental objective is promotion on liberal values.

Mr. Ghimpu said, “Everybody is presently speaking about European integration, observance of human rights and freedoms, but no concrete steps are in fact made to achieve this. Moldova is in need of a Liberal Party which would help resolve many problems”.

In his opinion, there is yet one more thing Moldova really needs – “a party uniting politicians that have never been at power. Only a party that has never backed the Communist nomenclature has the moral right to represent the Right political wing of the Republic of Moldova”.

The congress wrote in its Resolution that settlement of the Transnistria question would create a prerequisite for many solving socio-economic issues and for Moldova’s integration into Europe. The Liberal Party welcomes new approaches to tackling the Transnistrian problem, in particular the offer to change the format of the Transnistrian talks and to invite the United States, European Union and Romania to the negotiation table.

The Liberal Party voiced pity that Ukraine’s recent proposals on Transnistrian conflict settlement had been put forth without prior consultations with either the Moldovan government or public.
