HOUSING COMPLEX TO BE BUILT IN CHISINAU, IN WHICH AMERICAN FUND WILL INVEST 2 BILLION LEI

A state-of-the-art housing complex will be built in an eastern Chisinau suburban locality, in which an American fund will invest 2 billion lei, Vasily Kirtoka, Chairman of the Standing Committee for Construction, Architecture and Land Relations in the Chisinau Municipal Council [city legislature], told a news conference held at Infotag on Thursday.

In his opinion, the capital city badly needs this project to become a reality.

"The land plot assigned for the construction is the property of the AviaTehnologia enterprise, which has not been functioning for many years now. There is nothing except several dilapidated buildings, which are but disfigurement to the countryside. So, the appearance of the housing complex will breathe in a second life into that corner of the city situated near the charming Gradina Botanica Park. Indeed, there will appear up-to-date infrastructure, a road network with buses and trolleybuses. The complex territory will have two sports halls, a kindergarten, a parking lot etc.", said Kirtoka.

The official then touched on the question of construction - in the territory of the former Republican Stadium - of a new complex of the American Embassy to Moldova, and offered an opinion that the Republic of Moldova leadership "should offer another place for the Embassy of the great country".

"It's really a pity that the Embassy of such a great country has got involved with this project. I do not support this project. The former stadium territory [in the heart of the city] should be given to a social object, say a new stadium or an indoor ice rink with a park nearby. There should be no foreign embassy there", stated Vasily Kirtoka.

As was already reported by Infotag, in July 2018 the Moldovan Parliament passed a Law on permitting complete demolition of the former Republican Stadium and on selling of the 5.18-hectare land plot to the American side for building a new U.S. Embassy. The Moldovan Government was supposed to determine the cost of the transaction, to hold necessary negotiations and draw up a sale contract. It was believed then that the transaction cost may be US$15-20 million.

The Republican Stadium was commissioned in 1952. It had a capacity of over 20,000 spectators. The republic's leading football club Nistru, which had played in the Major League of the USSR Football Championships for several years, used to play its matches at the Stadium. However, all the sportive installations inside the stadium territory were demolished in 2007 when Moldova was headed by President Vladimir Voronin. He promised then that already by 2009 the capital city would receive an ultra-modern football arena instead of the ageing old Stadium. So, its Central Arch (entrance) and an ugly fence around the land plot were only what were remaining of the object throughout the past years, with tall weeds growing all over inside and with garbage heaps growing.
