26.09.2007 PETS GOING TO BE LAW-PROTECTED IN MOLDOVA

Chisinau, September 25 (Infotag). The keeping and protection of domestic animals will soon come to be regulated by law in Moldova, with 2 bills already in place – one drafted by the Alga Association for Homeless Animal Protection and the other by MP Vladimir Filat.

Association Chairwoman Valentina Dudnic told a news conference in Infotag today that, so far, there exists no legal frame in this sphere in Moldova, and that “last spring, we addressed for help to all the then candidates for Chisinau Mayor. Vladimir Filat promised to help us even he fails to become mayor.”

Filat said the bills have already been submitted to parliament, and “as these are very important documents not only in terms of animal protection but also for Moldova’s image on the international arena, we requested to consider them without delay. We are also going to submit bills on amending the Administrative Code and the Criminal Code.”

The new draft laws stipulate the issuing of passports on pets, specify special places to be allocated for walking the pets, determines the responsible for tackling stray animals and for building accommodation facilities for them, and the role to be played by government in handling the problem.

The Alga Association was founded in November 2006.
