VICTOR TOPA WILL ASK FOR POLITICAL ASYLUM IN EU COUNTRY

Entrepreneur Victor Topa, who was sentenced last week to 10 years of imprisonment for Victoriabank stocks misappropriation, will ask for political asylum in a European Union’s country and will fight for own rehabilitation, stated leader of the Anti-mafia movement, former Presidential adviser Sergiu Mocanu.

At the press conference on Monday, Mocanu said that “court controlled by Vladimir Plahotniuc [former Victoriabank’s board Chair, First Deputy Speaker of the Parliament, Deputy Chair of the Democratic Party of Moldova] hurried to try Topa, being concerned about Prosecutor General [Valeriu Zubco] may be dismissed”.

“Topa managed to leave Moldova and to date he is in a democratic European country. I supported his decision to slip from criminals’ grasp. He is not a runaway, he left to protect own freedom”, Mocanu said, adding that he is not afraid that his statements may be regarded as complicity.

The Anti-mafia leader said the sentence pronouncement in Topa’s absence is a gross infringement upon human rights.

“The struggle against mafia does not finish with Topa’s conviction, but only began”, he said, adding that if the court does not absolve Topa, he will go to Strasburg [European Court of Human Rights].

Concerning a closed Parliamentary meeting on Prosecutor General’s hearing scheduled for this week, Mocanu said that voting for the proposal, the Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova (LDPM) and Liberal Party abased themselves.

“At the meeting, the Prosecutor General will come with cases against Prime Minister Vladimir Filat [leader of the LDPM] and other state officials. Therefore, it is not surprising that they want hearings behind closed doors”, he said.

According to the movement leader, the Prosecutor General will not be fired as “his dismissal will mean criminal prosecution and conviction of Vladimir Plahotniuc”. “Concerning resignation of Marian Lupu from the Speaker’s post, it happens when Plahotniuc decided it”, he said.

Mocanu said that mafia in Moldova, as he forecasted, came to power. “Prime Minister Vladimir Filat only imitated struggle against mafia, signing the agreement on the Alliance for European Integration creation. When Filat and Ghimpu signed the treaty with devil, they sealed their own fate”, the Anti-mafia leader said.
