OPINION POLL REVEALS THAT FIVE POLITICAL PARTIES MAY BE PRESENT IN NEXT PARLIAMENT OF MOLDOVA… If a parliamentary election were held next Sunday, the Moldovan Parliament would come to consist of 5 factions, as per the findings of the opinion poll carried out earlier this month by the Moldovan Association of Sociologists and Demographers.

Association Chairman Victor Mocanu said at the poll results presentation at Infotag on Monday that the law-stipulated electoral barrier of 6% would be overcome by the Party of Socialists (16.4%), Our Party (15.2%), the European People’s Party of Moldova (EPPM) – 6.8%, the Democratic Party (6.7%) and the party that may be established in the nearest future on the basis of the Civil Platform “Demnitate si Adevar” [DA, “Dignity and Justice”] – 6.3%.

The Liberal Party (with 5.8%), Communist Party (5.5%) and Liberal Democratic Party (2.5%) appear to be not able to clear the electoral barrier, revealed the research.

According to the profiled experts interviewed by the Association, in case of an early election, there is a probability of coming to the Moldovan Parliament of the country’s first ever independent candidate – ex-Minister of Education Maia Sandu, for whom 1.4% citizens are ready to vote.

Most of interviewed citizens (66.2%) answered positively concerning the holding of an early parliamentary election in 2016, and only 19.3% spoke against this.

Also, an absolute majority of interviewed Moldovans (82.7%) stand for a direct, all-nation election of President, and only 9.9% believe the head of state should be elected as now – in the 101-member Parliament of Moldova.

Should a direct election of President be re-institutionalized in Moldova, Partidul Nostru [Our Party] leader Renato Usatii would be voted for by 17.8% of respondents. Following next would be Party of Socialists (PSRM) leader Igor Dodon (15.5%), then Maia Sandu (13.3%), MCP Chairman Vladimir Voronin (8.8%), EPPM leader Iurie Leanca (7.1%), LP First Deputy Chairman Dorin Chirtoaca (5.6%), DP Chairman Marian Lupu (4.9%), LP leader Mihai Ghimpu (4.3%), Zinaida Grechanaya of the PSRM (3.8%), ex-premier Ion Sturza (3.1%), DP Deputy Chairman Andrian Candu (2.3%), Liberal Democratic Party Chairman Vlad Filat (1.8%).

Infotag’s dossier: The opinion poll was conducted on November 10-18 in 75 various-level populated areas across Moldova among 1,187 respondents. Also, the research included 52 experts, and 373 protesters from the encampments set up yet in September before the Government Building and the Parliament Building. The pollsters are saying that error should not exceed ±3%.

…THAT MOST MOLDOVANS ARE VERY NEGATIVE ABOUT SITUATION IN COUNTRY…

A considerable majority of Moldova citizens believe that their country is moving in a wrong direction and, as a result, the population suffers severely of the current political crisis and of chronic corruption, growth of prices and utility rates, and of poverty, as per the findings of the opinion poll carried out by the Association of Sociologists and Demographers.

According to the researchers, 74.6% respondents said the country is moving in a wrong direction, and only 13.9% said – in a correct direction.

Over two-thirds of the interviewed citizens (67.5%) believe that the pro-European reforms initiated by the incumbent pro-European authorities have not achieved a sought result, though 15.3% believe the reforms are telling positively on the socio-economic situation in Moldova.

The interviewed citizens offered opinions that the best results in the authorities’ activities last 5 years were achieved in the fields of education (40.9%), sciences (38.4%), and culture (32.8%), and the poorest achievements were in struggle against corruption (54.1%), in Transnistrian conflict settlement (60.1%) and in domestic policy (45.9%).

An overwhelming majority of respondents stated that their family incomes are insufficient for a worthy living, 34.1% people said that they have no money enough even for most necessary things, 37.7% – that their incomes are barely sufficient to make two ends meet. And only 2.7% respondents stated they do not restrict themselves in anything.

…AND SUPPORT PROTESTS IN CENTRAL CHISINAU

A majority of the Moldovan population supports the demands being put forward by two large groups of protesters – the representatives of the Civil Platform DA, who have set up their tent village before the Government Building in the Chisinau's main square, and the representatives of the Party of Socialists and Our Party, with their tent encampment standing before the Parliament Building.

According to the findings of the opinion poll carried out by the Association of Sociologists and Demographers, over a half of respondents are alarmed with the protest actions continuing in central Chisinau, namely 51.3% citizens called the situation around the protesting as a tense one, while only 9.3% believe the situation is calm.

61.6% respondents regard the protesters’ demands to be quite founded ones, 22.8% people – as only partly founded ones, and 10.9% – as absolutely unfounded.

The interviewed citizens split up in practically equal parts in their opinions about a possibility of repetition of the April 7, 2009 disturbances in Chisinau, namely 43.9% are sure the current protesting will inevitably develop into a massive turmoil, while 44.8% are ruling out such a possibility.

A majority of interviewed citizens spoke out for founding a political party on the basis of the DA Platform (56.7%), while 25.1% stand against such a project.

72.5% respondents believe that since the latest parliamentary election held on November 30, 2014, the relationship between Moldova and the European Union has worsened, and only 6.5% think differently.

In case of holding a referendum on Moldova’s accession to the European Union, 38.9% respondents would vote positively. Accession to the Russia-led Eurasian Union is favored by 42.7% interviewed citizens.
