CMC LIBERALS GO INTO OPPOSITION
Chisinau. The Liberal Party (LP) faction of 11 in the 51-member Chisinau Municipal Council has announced its going into opposition to the factions of the ruling Moldovan Communist Party (16), the Christian Democratic Popular Party (4), the Social Democratic Party (3), and the Party of the Humanists (2).
LP leader and Chisinau Municipal Council ex-Chairman Mihai Ghimpu stated at a news conference in Infotag today, “The scenario, prepared by the Communist rulers of Moldova, has led to usurping of legal power in the Municipal Council. Instead of working in citizens’ interests, the said parties have been upsetting the Council’s normal work yet from the summer of 2007. The Liberal Party will challenge with the Appeals Chamber the decision on dismissing the CMC Chairman, and until the final solution of the dispute the Liberals shall be in opposition”.
In his opinion, the SDPM’s treason has shown the true face of the leaders of the party that claimed itself to be an anti-communist force.
“The Social Democratic Party of Moldova, headed by Dumitru Braghis and Eduard Musuc, is an instrument in the Communists’ hands being used for suppressing the democratic coalition in the country. This is proved by the pressure being put on the Municipal Council by Genadie Glusenco of the Ministry of Local Public Administration, as well as by Eduard Musuc’s constant presence on the TV channels controlled by the Communist authorities. The latest event in this row was the yesterday’s meeting Musuc had with President Voronin”, said Mihai Ghimpu.
Liberal Party Deputy Chairman, Chisinau Mayor [and Ghimpu’s nephew] Dorin Chirtoaca stated the LP shall not let promotion of the interests of the parties that have formed the coalition with the Communists.
“It is clear to everyone that the Communists have their own interests in everything, and they are trying to railroad their certain projects through the Municipal Council. As the Chisinau Mayor is eligible to challenge the Council’s unlawful decisions, I shall be doing it every time when this is needed”, promised the 29-year-old Mayor.
In his belief, the incumbent CMC Chairman Eduard Musuc will be trying to promote the projects he is strongly interested in – ones pertaining to some major housing repair works and to the building of real-estate objects in restricted zones.
“The SDPM leader MP Dumitru Braghis has clearly expressed his interestedness in the would-be Chisinau sewage purification plant, and Council member Oleg Onishenko of the Party of the Humanists is eager to provide 20 million lei from the municipal budget to companies he controls”, maintained Dorin Chirtoaca.
He emphasized that the Liberal Party “shall never agree to forming a coalition with the Communist Party and its satellites. At the 2009 parliamentary elections, Moldova citizens will decide which parties to vote for – for those ones that are consistent and have never played for the Communists, i.e. for parties like the LP”.
