05 april, 2024

The Ministry of Defense of Moldova has signed a contract for the acquisition of a second new radar for monitoring the country's airspace. According to the ministry's press service, the document was signed by Deputy Chief of the General Staff, General Sergei Cerempei, and on the European Union side by the Director-General of the Estonian Centre for Defence Investment (ECDI), Magnus-Valdemar Saar.

According to the announcement, this week, a group of international experts held meetings with the Ministry of Defense and the General Staff to coordinate topics related to equipment projects and technical procurements within the program for modernizing the National Army.

Defense Minister Anatolii Nosatyi expressed gratitude to EU partners who continuously assist in strengthening the country's military capabilities. His deputy, Serghei Plop, held a meeting with the ECDI expert team, responsible for the procurement procedure and project implementation. Assistance offered through the European Peace Facility (EPF) was discussed in various areas such as mobility, logistics, communication, and airspace surveillance.

On December 20, 2023, the National Army received the GM 200 radar from France for airspace surveillance. It was purchased from the budget, with a cost of around 14 million euros. The country's authorities hope to receive the second radar by the end of 2025.

The European Union has decided to allocate 41 million euros through the EPF for equipping the National Army of Moldova. Within the EPF initiative, the Armed Forces of the Republic have already been allocated 87 million euros over the past three years.
