FMR. DEPUTY PREMIER REGARDS MOLDOVA’S ECONOMIC PERSPECTIVES AS FRAGILE
The Moldovan economy has weak prospects due to the authorities' inattention to numerous problems. This opinion was expressed by former Deputy Prime Minister and Member of Parliament Ion Gutu on Tuesday at a press conference at the Infotag agency, at which he presented his book headlined “The Republic of Moldova: 30 Years before and after the Collapse of the Soviet Union.”

The author noted that although he does not feel any nostalgia for the USSR, “But on the basis of dry figures alone, one should admit that the years of 1960s to 1980s were the period of an economic miracle for Moldova, when hundreds of new industrial and agricultural enterprises appeared here and when the republic's GDP quadrupled”.

The second part of the book is devoted to the period of independence, when, according to Gutu, “negative moments occurred for the economy and the lives of citizens” - numerous management mistakes, the closure of enterprises, an economic decline, which currently stands at merely 77% of the 1989 level.

“In fact, we are the only country in Europe that has not been able to achieve the level of economic development that it had before independence,” Gutu said.

He noted that due to failures in the agricultural sector, today the level of food security in Moldova is practically at zero.

“The authorities should pay special attention to agriculture, which should become the hallmark of Moldova,” Gutu emphasized.
