MNA WILL HAVE 52 MANDATES IN NEXT PARLIAMENT, URECHEAN CLAIMS
Chisinau. At the 2009 parliamentary elections, the oppositional Moldova Noastra Alliance (MNA) will receive approximately as much as in 2005 – some 34-35% ballots, which will enable it to have 52 mandates in the 101-member Moldovan legislative forum, MNA leader Serafim Urechean stated at the news conference in Infotag today.
Urechean explained that with a majority of mandates, the Alliance will create a coalition comprising all democratic parties – enough to form a government and elect a president.
“I realize this may sound somewhat immodest from my part, but I am stating with confidence that I will be the next President of the Republic of Moldova. Really, if not me then who?” he questioned, adding that real candidacies are so few.
Urechean stressed that he and his party comrades have not lost even a single election – be this his career of Chisinau Mayor [for over 10 years until 2005] or of a parliamentarian.
“But the greatest achievement was in 2007, when we deprived the Communists of their former influence in the country – when they dominated in 32-of-34 raions of Moldova.
“In 2007, the Communists remained a dominant force only in 11 raions, where they still have their Raion Chairmen. Currently, 21 raions are governed by coalitions of democratic parties, and 14 raions are headed by MNA chairpersons. And yet in 7 more raions our comrades are holding the posts of Deputy Raion Chairpersons”, he said.
