03.11.2004 CHISINAU SAVIORS PUT OFF PICKETING (NEWS CONFERENCE IN INFOTAG)

Chisinau, November 3 (Infotag). The Civil Committee for Chisinau Salvation had to give up its intention to picket the City Hall on November 5 and 6, because Chisinau Mayor Serafim Urechean has issued a permission to Transnistrian armed conflict veterans to hold, on these very days, a manifestation in Mayor’s support. Committee activists told a news conference in Infotag today they were the first to submit an application for picketing, so the city authorities simply violated the law when they gave preference to a party that applied later – the vets. “To avoid physical confrontation in the street, we have put off our picketing, but will challenge the Mayor’s actions in court. After issuing the permission to the veterans, he flew to Strasbourg in order to stay away from the conflict and let passions cool down in his absence”, it was said at the news conference. Republican Party chairman Valery Yefremov named Serafim Urechean “a gross intriguer”, whose behavior “falls under Criminal Code provisions”. Yefremov referred to the recent instance when the Mayor issued 10 extra permits for passenger transportation by route taxi minibuses on route #175 in Chisinau, which had quite many vehicles [with most of them belonging to Yefremov] even without the new ten. As a result, overpopulation led to open clashes between bus drivers. The conference organizers accused Mayor Urechean of discriminating non-governmental organizations.
